ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ali Waller is a multidisciplinary installation artist currently based on the East Coast. A majority of their work pertains to the relationship between creation and healing with recurring motifs of impermanence, destruction, and resurrection.

Their most notable project, ‘/200’ invites survivors of sexual assault to be cast in plaster as they recount their stories. The number 200 reflects the $200 Jeffrey Epstein paid victims for their silence. Since its origin Ali has cast 1,715 people ages 19-82 from all over the globe.

Other projects of note include ‘mommy,’ ‘consumed,’ and ‘up in flames' all of which include fragmented bodies, found objects, and nods to relics and rituals in the Catholic tradition.

Installations for each of these bodies of work (no pun intended) can be invited to non profit organizations, universities, and private galleries. To read more about Ali's speaking engagements, workshops, and other community lead events click the link below.

ALI'S PRESS PACKET

Single Day Installations - Single Day Installations are installed the morning of an event (ie Take Back the Night, Fundraisers, or Sexual Assault Awareness Month events) either hung with command strips or displayed on pedestals. It is then broken down that night. These events are usually volunteer based/ pro bono and student lead. ($0-500)

Long Term Installations - Long term installations implies a month to a few months. During a long term installation students or community members are invited to be cast for the installation on campus. Students’ casts can be paid by students for a considerably discounted rate of $30 per cast or by the organization/ university in question (we will ballpark a number of students to budget for.) These likely take some interdepartmental planning so upon request packets are available from previous ‘casting residencies’ at universities like Texas Tech, Boston University, and The University of Tennessee. The intention behind these is to bring about conversation between students, faculty, and the surrounding area about social justice and radical change within your community. With that in mind many universities have scheduled speaking events and art healing workshops during these visits. The beautiful thing about month-long visits is that it gives students time to learn more about the project, what it is like to be a professional artist, gallery level installation, and their own resources for healing. An installation created in collaboration with students will be presented at the end of the month and can be displayed for any agreed duration. ($2,000-15,000 depending on packet choice.)

Workshops / Speaking Events - There are two workshops that can be chosen for a day to a week long event. These are perfect for people interested in learning more about casting and fabrication. We will focus more on the technical side of casting while touching on points about being trauma informed while working with models, how to enter a mindset of healing through art, and how to convey a story through sculpture. One workshop is titled, 'Mask Making: An Intro to Plaster Life Casting and Art Healing' and the other is titled, 'Silicone Casting: The Basics of Replicating Yourself.' Mask making can be completed in a four hour or a two day workshop. Students will learn to cast their own faces and paint them according to an art healing exercise. The silicone workshop will allow students to learn how to cast hands and faces in silicone, paint plaster, and display pieces. Upon request this can also be a workshop for how to cast small object and hand sculpt. ($2,000-8,000 per 25 students)

Digital Collaboration/ Satellite - I recommend digital engagements to smaller organizations/ universities who are unsure of what to predict in terms of engagement. These can also be a great way to get students to engage before a month long casting residency. These can be paneled discussions, Q&A's, lectures, or self casting promos. Self casting kits are $40 each and can be a great way for participants to experience '/200' on their own terms. Casting can be done in private or if participants would like instructions they may cast hands during a Q&A via Zoom.
